Ronald’s story of recovery at Southlake
As a Level III Trauma Centre, Southlake Health provides timely and coordinated care for patients with medium acuity traumatic injuries. Trauma is a term used to describe physical injury that occurs suddenly due to an external force or event, such as accidents, sports injuries, violence, or other incidents that cause damage to the body’s tissues, organs, and bones.
This Seniors Month, we’re shining a spotlight on older adults and the specialized care they may need after serious injury. While trauma can happen at any age, the average patient seen through Southlake’s trauma program is 67 years old. The most common cause is a fall.
That was the case for Ronald, a senior brought to Southlake after falling down a flight of stairs. He suffered a cervical spine fracture, requiring a special neck collar for healing. While Ronald received most of his care in the Medicine Acute Care Unit, supported by a team with expertise in managing complex conditions, what truly made a difference was the consistent and expert collar care provided in close collaboration with Southlake’s Trauma Program. This dedicated attention focused not only on his comfort, it also played a crucial role in preventing common issues like skin irritation, ensuring he healed properly and without setbacks.
“I can’t say enough about the care I received at Southlake. Every person I met treated me with kindness and respect. They took the time to explain things and made sure I was comfortable and supported. I’m so grateful for everything they did to help me heal.”
– Ronald
Southlake’s designation as a Level III Trauma Centre means that patients like Ronald have access to life-saving interventions close to home. This is critical since trauma can happen suddenly and without warning.
Southlake’s Trauma team has made senior-focused care a priority. Older patients often face different risks than younger trauma patients, including slower healing times and a greater chance of complications.
“Every trauma patient deserves care that meets them where they are,” said Dr. Leeor Sommer, Trauma Medical Director at Southlake. “For older adults, that often means looking beyond the injury to understand their full health picture and recovery needs.”
As Southlake continues to strengthen its trauma services, Ronald’s story is a powerful example of how the right care at the right time can help seniors recover, regain their independence, and return to the life they love.
