Dr. David Makary brings more than 10 years of leadership experience and local community engagement to new role

Southlake Regional Health Centre is pleased to announce Dr. David Makary as the new Vice President, Medical Affairs, beginning November 1. Dr. Makary joined Southlake in 2012 as an Associate Staff Physician and has served in several Southlake departments, including: Emergency, Paediatric and General Internal Medicine.

“I am excited to welcome another fantastic medical leader to Southlake’s senior leadership team,” said Arden Krystal, President and CEO. “Dr. Makary has shown he’s a great collaborator through his work in his family practice, the Southlake Community Ontario Health Team (OHT), and University of Toronto. Combined with his experience and dedication to high-quality patient care, he is a perfect fit for this role as Southlake continues to engage physicians serving in hospital and in the community.”

In this new role, Dr. Makary will provide administrative medical leadership as a member of the Senior Leadership Team. He’ll work collaboratively with the newly appointed Chief of Staff, team leaders, and professional staff throughout the organization to deliver the leading edge care Southlake is known for by overseeing Physician Leaders in each program.

“I am looking forward to working more closely with Dr. Makary as we both move into our new roles,” said Dr. Charmaine van Schaik, Chief of Staff. “I know we’re both looking forward to collaborating with staff, physicians, and our partners in the community to provide the best care possible to our patients.”

During his time at Southlake, Dr. Makary has served as Chief of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Primary Care Lead and Co-Chair of the Executive Steering Committee for the Southlake Community Ontario Health Team (OHT). He also has experience in quality improvement through his work establishing and growing the Southlake Academic Family Health Team’s Quality Improvement Plan. Dr. Makary is also a Lecturer for the University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.

“I’m looking forward to stepping into this role and strengthening our relationships with our physician group, clinical teams and partners to continue to deliver leading edge care to the patients we serve,” said Dr. Makary. “Coming out of the pandemic, healthcare has never been more important and I hope to help guide the Southlake community through healthcare’s changing tides for a better patient experience.”
