Southlake’s Statement on Mass Killings in London, Ontario

Tuesday June 8, 2021

We are deeply saddened by the targeted Islamophobic attack in London, Ontario on June 6 which killed four members of a Muslim family and left a child seriously injured. Our condolences go out to the families, friends and community at large as they grieve the loss of loved and honoured community members. This tragedy reminds us of the daily reality and horrific outcomes of hate and violence faced by racialized communities across Canada.

Southlake stands against Islamophobia and all other forms of racism and hate. We stand with Muslim individuals, families, children and communities as action and justice is demanded. At this time, we would like to acknowledge and recognize the outstanding contributions by Muslim members in our community to the growth and development of our province and country despite enduring racism, bias and persecution.

We understand members of the Southlake community might be feeling anxious and unsafe. In the days, weeks and months ahead, the responsibility falls to all of us, individually and collectively, to find ways within our networks and communities to address and combat Islamophobia and all forms of hate-based violence. We stand committed to working together as an organization to denounce the rise of violence and hate crimes.
