As part of Be A Donor Month, Southlake Health unveiled the new Blossom of Hope mural, a meaningful tribute to the life-saving impact of organ and tissue donation.
A tribute to hope and healing
The Blossom of Hope mural is a symbol of remembrance, hope, and renewal. It honours donors and their families, celebrates recipients, and recognizes the Southlake teams whose compassion, expertise, and coordination make organ and tissue donation possible.
The unveiling ceremony brought together Southlake team members, leaders, and the family of Alex, whose organ donation after his passing in Southlake’s Intensive Care Unit last year helped save lives. Through an extraordinary gift, Alex donated four organs, including both lungs, leaving behind a powerful legacy of hope.
During the ceremony, members of Alex’s family placed a flower on the tree within the mural, a moving tribute that reflects both remembrance and the enduring impact of donation.
“We honour the work that’s done here and the people who have given life a chance,” said Alex’s family. “We still grieve but we’re happy that we’ve had this occasion to honour Alex’s life and the lives he was able to continue.”
The impact of organ and tissue donation at Southlake
In 2024-25, organ and tissue donation at Southlake helped save 18 lives. Southlake’s teams also helped recover 20 organs that were later transplanted, while tissue donation enhanced the lives of 42 more people. These numbers reflect the extraordinary care, coordination and compassion involved in every donation.
“The Blossom of Hope mural is a powerful reminder of the lives touched by organ and tissue donation,” said Alyson McQueen, Director, Emergency, Trauma, and Critical Care, Southlake Health. “It honours the generosity of donor families, the hope it brings to recipients, and the dedication of the teams who support this work with compassion and care.”
