Holding hands again: A reunion in Southlake’s Emergency Department

Friday February 13, 2026

This Valentine’s Day, Southlake Health is celebrating a powerful reminder that love can be found everywhere, even in an Emergency Department.

A love for the ages

Arnold and Helen McNeill have been married for 74 years. However, due to health concerns, the couple has been living apart in order to receive the care they need in different settings.

Arnold had one simple wish for the holidays: to see his wife, Helen. Their family had planned a visit for New Year’s Eve so they could spend time together. Unfortunately, those plans had to quickly change when Helen experienced a spinal fracture and needed care at Southlake’s Emergency Department.

Around the same time, Arnold’s health also took a sudden turn. Developing an infection and becoming increasingly confused, he was transported by ambulance to the same hospital.

Reuniting in an unexpected place

While Arnold and Helen were receiving care, two Southlake Emergency Department nurses learned about Arnold’s wish and the couple’s long separation. Right away they knew they had to help.

The nurses carefully coordinated for Arnold and Helen to be reunited in the Emergency Department. Side by side on twin hospital beds, the couple reached for one another, held hands, and enjoyed the last day of 2025 together, just as they had for more than seven decades.

For the McNeill family, it was an unforgettable reunion made possible by the kindness of Southlake’s team.

“This had been Arnold’s Christmas wish,” the family shared. “These nurses should be recognized for their exceptional care and compassion to ensure the comfort of their patients.”

Celebrating Valentine’s Day close to home

This Valentine’s Day, Southlake extends heartfelt thanks to the incredible team of medical staff, staff, volunteers, and learners who go above and beyond every day to bring comfort, dignity, and human connection to patients, families, and the communities Southlake serves.

Healthcare is about people caring for people, and Southlake is proud to deliver leading edge care, close to home to every person who comes through our doors.

Thank you to the McNeill family for sharing this story and allowing Southlake to honour this remarkable moment.
