Southlake’s Regional Cardiac Care Program is dedicated to being at the forefront of innovation. The hardworking team of clinicians is constantly looking for safer, less-invasive options for procedures through the use of new technologies.
Southlake is always willing to try new, innovative treatments to ensure leading edge care for the patients who depend on us. “Technology is coming out fast and furiously, and when you have a patient come to you, you want to select what is the best approach for that patient, not just what’s available,” said Dr. Carolyn Teng, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Southlake. It is because of incredible clinicians and physicians, including Dr. Teng, that Southlake is able to do so. However, none of it would be possible without the generous support of our communities.
The Mitral Clip is a perfect example. Before, lifesaving bypass and valve surgeries were extremely traumatic for patients, requiring the breastbone to be broken to access the heart. It leads to a long healing process, with a higher risk of infection, more chance of patients being readmitted to the hospital for follow-up care, and more time before they can get back to living their lives. For elderly patients considered high-risk, the invasive procedure can be too much for their bodies to handle.
However, the Mitral Clip is different. This innovative, minimally-invasive procedure has the potential to replace otherwise high-risk surgeries. Inserted through a small incision in the chest, the Mitral Clip repairs blood flow between chambers of the heart and can be placed inside the body using ultrasound and x-ray. That means our patients have access to the advanced, minimally-invasive procedure that can help them get back to their daily lives faster, and provides more options for high-risk patients to get the care they need with the best possible outcomes.
