Leading edge care by your side
Our main priority at Southlake Foundation is to fund the most urgent priorities at our hospital – from basic equipment like hospital beds and IV poles, to state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging technology. These needs aren’t always predictable, but can affect our ability to deliver the high-quality care our patients expect and deserve.
That’s why a donation to the areas of greatest need is the best way to make the biggest impact with your donation. By supporting Southlake’s priority needs you are giving us the flexibility we need to respond quickly when any tool or basic piece of equipment is in need of replacement, respond to opportunities to be at the forefront of innovation, and make sure that our teams have the tools they need to care for every patient who comes through our doors.
Our hospital depends on you
Your support is the only way we can keep our patient care facilities up-to-date and give our experts the tools they need to deliver the best possible care to our communities. Why? The government does not provide funding for most new or replacement equipment. Southlake relies solely on the generosity of our communities to fund vital upgrades and infrastructure renovations to make sure that we have the right space and the right equipment to provide the leading edge care you expect and deserve, right here close to home.
When you need care… we need the right tools, close to home.
New and replacement equipment and technology mean our healthcare teams have the right tools to care for our patients when they need us most. The result is faster diagnoses, more innovative and minimally-invasive approaches, better patient monitoring and quicker recovery. This means an improved patient experience for the increasing number of people who rely on Southlake to provide leading edge and compassionate care, close to home.
At Southlake, we never want to hear our doctors, clinicians, or staff say: “We only have one of these pieces of equipment. The patient will have to wait.” Or, “we don’t have the equipment we need. We have to transfer the patient.”
Our communities deserve leading edge care that’s close to home. This is only possible if we have the equipment and tools to treat them. Southlake relies solely on the generosity of donors to fund critical equipment across every program – from basic needs like beds, IV poles and blanket warmers, to advanced technology that is changing the way we deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients.
Helping Joan get back to living.
“I learned I needed a pacemaker about 10 years ago. I live in Markham so I was surprised when I was referred to travel north to Southlake and not south to Toronto for care. I will always remember how exceptional my care was,” says Joan.
“Now I give back because I know someone made a donation before me so I could have this treatment here. It’s my way of saying thank you.”
— Joan, Grateful Patient
When you need surgery…you want to be close to home.
The demands on Southlake are increasing like never before. Our community is one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario and is expected to jump by 800,000 people to reach 2.3 million by 2041. This will put further strain on our Surgical Program, which is already stretched to meet the needs of our communities.
Your investment in our Surgical Program will replace end-of-life equipment with the advanced technology our surgical teams need to deliver the best outcomes for our patients. You can keep leading edge surgical care close to home where family and friends can offer support nearby, without the burden of traveling downtown for care.
A strong Surgical Program is the cornerstone of our hospital, and a key support to our regional programs, with 25% of our surgeries being performed on cancer and 18% on cardiac patients respectively. Our Surgical Program is renowned for performing innovative procedures that provide precision care with less risk and quicker recovery times for patients, for the best possible outcomes.
The Best Tools for the Job
Thousands of patients undergo surgery at Southlake every year, but our surgical and anesthesia teams are in critical need of upgraded equipment to replace aging tools across the department. From department-wide scopes to anesthesia machines (used not only in the surgical department but across the hospital), your gift will give the best tools to a team who holds life in their hands on a daily basis.
The Gift of Time
Southlake’s Chief of Surgery, Dr. Julius Toth, tells us: “Patients are now living well beyond what they thought were life-ending events. They come back years later and tell us about their milestone moments – dancing at their daughter’s wedding, finally taking that big vacation, or welcoming their new grandchild into the world. We’re giving our patients more time – because there’s nothing more precious than the gift of time!”
You can help Southlake’s surgeons give the gift of time by donating today.
Leading Edge Women’s Health Care, Close to Home
At Southlake, we pride ourselves on our dedication to providing leading edge care close to home for our patients and their families. But there is still work to do to ensure that the women in our communities are getting the advanced care they need, when they need it most.
Southlake needs $6.3 million to meet women’s health needs, which include new and replacement equipment for advanced cardiac, breast cancer, and gynecological care and treatment.
Among the most urgent priorities are things like:
Vein Harvesting Tower and Trays
Innovative equipment that allows veins to be harvested in a minimally-invasive way for cardiac bypass surgery. This approach means significantly less scarring, faster recovery, less post-operative pain, and reduced risk of infection and need for return visits to the hospital for additional care post-surgery.
Magnetic Breast Seeds
These remarkable devices, less than 1mm across, help guide surgeons to accurately locate tumours. This means reduced incisions and tissue removal, resulting in less scarring and greater greater patient comfort. This helps speed up pre-operative patient preparation, allowing surgical teams to perform more surgeries in a single day. Ultimately, this means more help for women facing cancer when time is of the essence.
This new equipment allows women to directly control the paddles that position the breast for imaging and manage their own breast compression, which results in improved image quality with less pain and discomfort. By making patients more comfortable and less anxious, they are more likely to return for their next mammogram – a critical factor in successfully detecting and treating breast cancer.
As a woman, I obviously think women’s health care is very important. Women are the backbone of our communities. Keeping them healthy keeps us all healthy. By coming together and focusing on women’s health, we will strengthen the entire community.Dr. Sara Temple, Surgical Oncologist
There’s No Time To Wait
We must address the relentless growth in demand that is straining our capacity to deliver the best care possible. We must ensure access to the latest advances in equipment and technology. And we must do this for everyone, including women.
By coming together, our cardiac, cancer and gynecological teams will have the tools and equipment they need to provide the women in our communities with faster, more accurate diagnoses, access to more minimally-invasive procedures and improved outcomes.
Leading edge care for the men in our communities
At Southlake, our teams are passionate about providing innovative care to everyone who comes through our doors. But, in order to do so, they need the right tools in hand to provide our patients with timely care and the best possible outcomes that they expect and deserve. That’s where you come in.
Our surgical Uroview table and holmium laser have reached “end of service”. Already, challenges with the condition of this equipment can mean unexpected delays in procedures, and prolonged pain and discomfort for our patients. Without replacement, delivery of patient procedures requiring this equipment will cease entirely. Patients with scheduled diagnostic procedures, or who come to our Emergency Department suffering from excruciating kidney stones, would need to go elsewhere for treatment. With your help, we can prevent that from happening.
It’s not about having the latest gadgets. It’s about not turning patients away.
Urology is an area of health care that is rarely discussed, but critically important to the wellbeing of so many. Our generous communities have already contributed $1.6 million towards this vital area of care, equipping our Urology team with the tools and technology they need and making early diagnosis, treatment, and better patient outcomes a reality.
When you just aren’t feeling right…you want to be close to home.
Leading edge cardiac care for more than 10,000 patients every year
More than 160,000 patients have benefited from the expertise of Southlake’s Regional Cardiac Care Program since its inception in 2003. Today, the program is known for performing a long list of first-ever procedures to treat heart conditions and heart rhythm disturbances. More than 1.5 million residents rely on Southlake for advanced and emergency cardiac care when every second counts, from across York Region, South Simcoe County, Dufferin County, and as far north as Muskoka.
Your donation will make it possible for us to continue to provide leading edge cardiac care for your family, friends and neighbours when it matters most.
Help us today to care for tomorrow’s cardiac patients
At Southlake, we pride ourselves on always providing innovative care for the best possible patient outcomes. But to continue providing this level of care, we rely on the generosity of our communities to help make sure our expert cardiac teams are equipped with the tools and technology they need to do their best work. With technology advancing in leaps and bounds, and high patient volumes that are putting wear and tear on existing equipment, repairs, replacements, and upgrades are frequent and ongoing needs.
The Impact You Can Have
Patients recover faster and go home sooner when donors like you invest in Southlake. That’s because your support helps purchase new technology that enables physicians to quickly diagnose heart conditions using 3D imaging and perform complex cardiac surgeries minimally-invasively.
Your investment in leading edge equipment is the only way we can keep up with the pace of ever-changing technology and deliver the best possible care to our communities.
Technology is advancing rapidly and we need to keep pace. Your vital support puts the right tools in the hands of our medical teams so our patients can benefit from the latest innovations in diagnosis and cardiac treatments. Imagine a patient undergoing heart surgery and going home with only a small incision. People living in our communities can get leading edge heart treatments that help them recover faster, right here close to home.
When you hear the word “cancer”… you want to be close to home.
Southlake is passionate about staying at the leading edge of cancer research and innovation, to continue providing comprehensive, cutting-edge diagnoses, treatment and care close to home, making sure our patients have what’s most important – time.
Bringing cancer treatment closer to home
Since the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre opened at Southlake in 2010, thousands of patients have been able to receive their cancer treatment closer to home. Their lives were made easier during one of the most difficult journeys they have ever faced, thanks to the kindness and generosity of people like you.
Help us serve the next 10,000 patients
Our cancer program is in need of critical equipment to ensure the very best in diagnosis and treatment for our patients. Your gift will provide us with the tools we need to treat more patients, and more complex diagnoses, keeping cancer patients close to home when they need it the most.
Patients undergoing cancer treatment deserve the best possible care. When you give to Southlake, you help make their experience better. Your support is the only way we can purchase new and replacement equipment like IV pumps and comfortable chairs that matter to patients spending hours sitting while undergoing treatment. With your help, new technology is close to home so patients who need treatment and support don’t have the extra burden of traveling to the city.
When “it’s time”…you want to be close to home.
It can be a helpless feeling for parents when your kids are sick or hurt. In times like these, it’s reassuring to know help is around the corner. Now parents have options when they come to Southlake. From prenatal to neo-natal, to paediatric services, Southlake is here to care for your precious little ones, every step of the way.
My twin boys were born at 32 weeks and whisked away for immediate treatment. The next time I saw them they had tubes and wires keeping them alive. They spent 26 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and I was a mess of emotions. The staff were always there. Their constant reassurance, skill and compassion meant everything.Krissy, Grateful Patient
Your investment will support our Regional Level 2C Nursery to help our teams better care for babies and save lives. With your support, we can update older equipment to give babies in emergency situations a better chance for survival. For example, replacing our older model isolettes with new all-in-one incubators will give staff quick access to resuscitate and stabilize newborns. This equipment, and more like it, makes a difference in the care we provide.
Compassionate Care for Our Tiniest Patients
Our team of compassionate paediatricians see children in our Paediatric Urgent Care Clinic, Asthma Clinic, and others for specific testing. We even pioneered a volunteer Cuddler Program that’s now gaining popularity in hospitals across Canada, where trained volunteers cuddle babies during extended hospital stays when parents are unable to provide the hugs they need.
Your donation will help this busy program purchase and upgrade equipment, and expand the services offered in our neo-natal intensive care unit.
When you need care fast…you want to be close to home.
The Emergency Department is the front door of our hospital, open 24 hours a day, every day. But the demands for emergency care at Southlake are increasing like never before. Our community is one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario, putting added pressure on our Emergency Department. Your investment is critical to help improve our patients’ experiences.
With your help, our teams can deliver high-quality, timely care because they will always have the equipment they need at their fingertips – from advanced equipment like vital signs monitors to necessities like examination tables and IV poles.
You depend on our Emergency team. Now we need your help. Your support can help ensure our family, friends and neighbours have the best possible emergency experience at Southlake.
A new patient needs urgent care every four and a half minutes. An elderly man has a seizure in the night. A child is injured playing hockey. There is a serious car accident on a nearby highway. Chances are these people – our family, friends and neighbours – will come to Southlake’s Emergency Department for urgent care.
Through low-cost, low-tech solutions, Southlake will continue to implement efficiencies in our Emergency Department where possible to ensure that our patients have the best possible experience when they come to us for care.
Better begins with the space to heal
Mental illness is an invisible disease, unlike a broken bone, blocked artery or tumour that you can pinpoint in an imaging test. But it has a visible need: space. For a patient in crisis, where they recover determines how they recover. Our passion at Southlake is to create the space where people can turn their darkest hour into the beginning of a journey to recovery.
A hidden crisis close to home
Our community faces the perfect storm of the mental health crisis: a rapidly growing population, aging demographics, and rising rates of mental illness and addiction. Our Mental Health Program is stretched far beyond capacity, sometimes as high as 180% of what it was designed for.
We can build this together
It’s time to make space for mental health, with a new Emergent Mental Health Assessment Centre so that patients don’t have to visit an overcrowded, distressing Emergency Department in a moment of crisis. It doesn’t end there: we’re transforming our existing capabilities with private rooms, more beds, outdoor space, and greater privacy. But we can’t do this alone. Your donations are critical to facing the ever-growing need for urgent mental health care close to home.
Building Better Care at Southlake
The Impact You Can Have
The needs of this program start with space, creating private areas that feel calm, reassuring and safe, even some outdoor areas for fresh air that is proven to lessen anxiety. Your support will help us provide the best environment for our patients to receive the care they need.
Our hospital serves a large and growing population, with ever-increasing demands for Mental Health services and care. 33% of Ontario’s group homes are located in York Region – 17 alone falling under Southlake’s catchment area and eight within walking distance of Southlake.
Whether it be for a one-time crisis, or ongoing mental illness, our team of nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, recreational and occupational therapists, dietitians, crisis workers, and child and youth counselors is designed to provide comprehensive care at every stage during our patients’ ongoing treatment.
When recovery is your biggest priority…you need care that’s close to home.
Our Medicine Program includes beds for intensive care, acute medicine, medically complex patients, rehabilitative patients, cancer and palliative car patients, as well as our 30-bed Restorative Care Unit. Every day, our interprofessional team provides vital treatment that includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and recreational therapy.
We care for patients so they can get stronger, recover faster and get back home. But we can’t do it alone. Your support puts the right tools and equipment at patient bedsides so they are readily available for our care teams – this way they have more time to focus on the needs of each patient. For example, devices like ceiling lifts make it easier and faster for staff to move patients from a bed to a chair safely – important in minimizing the risk of conditions such as pressure injuries and bed sores.
Almost half of the beds at Southlake are for patients within our Medicine Program. These patients are seniors facing impairments after a stroke, young adults with diabetes, chronic illness and much more. Our job is to help them get stronger so they can get back to living again.
