The demands on Southlake are increasing like never before. Our community is one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario and is expected to jump by 800,000 people to reach 2.3 million by 2041. This will put further strain on our Surgical Program, which is already stretched to meet the needs of our communities.

Your investment in our Surgical Program will replace end-of-life equipment with the advanced technology our surgical teams need to deliver the best outcomes for our patients. You can keep leading edge surgical care close to home where family and friends can offer support nearby, without the burden of traveling downtown for care.

A strong Surgical Program is the cornerstone of our hospital, and a key support to our regional programs, with 25% of our surgeries being performed on cancer and 18% on cardiac patients respectively. Our Surgical Program is renowned for performing innovative procedures that provide precision care with less risk and quicker recovery times for patients, for the best possible outcomes.

Thousands of patients undergo surgery at Southlake every year, but our surgical and anesthesia teams are in critical need of upgraded equipment to replace aging tools across the department. From department-wide scopes to anesthesia machines (used not only in the surgical department but across the hospital), your gift will give the best tools to a team who holds life in their hands on a daily basis.

Leading Edge Women’s Health Care, Close to Home

At Southlake, we pride ourselves on our dedication to providing leading edge care close to home for our patients and their families. But there is still work to do to ensure that the women in our communities are getting the advanced care they need, when they need it most.

Southlake needs $6.3 million to meet women’s health needs, which include new and replacement equipment for advanced cardiac, breast cancer, and gynecological care and treatment.
Among the most urgent priorities are things like:

Vein Harvesting Tower and Trays

Innovative equipment that allows veins to be harvested in a minimally-invasive way for cardiac bypass surgery. This approach means significantly less scarring, faster recovery, less post-operative pain, and reduced risk of infection and need for return visits to the hospital for additional care post-surgery.

Magnetic Breast Seeds

These remarkable devices, less than 1mm across, help guide surgeons to accurately locate tumours. This means reduced incisions and tissue removal, resulting in less scarring and greater greater patient comfort. This helps speed up pre-operative patient preparation, allowing surgical teams to perform more surgeries in a single day. Ultimately, this means more help for women facing cancer when time is of the essence.

Mammography Machines

This new equipment allows women to directly control the paddles that position the breast for imaging and manage their own breast compression, which results in improved image quality with less pain and discomfort. By making patients more comfortable and less anxious, they are more likely to return for their next mammogram – a critical factor in successfully detecting and treating breast cancer.

Leading edge care for the men in our communities

At Southlake, our teams are passionate about providing innovative care to everyone who comes through our doors. But, in order to do so, they need the right tools in hand to provide our patients with timely care and the best possible outcomes that they expect and deserve. That’s where you come in.

Our surgical Uroview table and holmium laser have reached “end of service”. Already, challenges with the condition of this equipment can mean unexpected delays in procedures, and prolonged pain and discomfort for our patients. Without replacement, delivery of patient procedures requiring this equipment will cease entirely. Patients with scheduled diagnostic procedures, or who come to our Emergency Department suffering from excruciating kidney stones, would need to go elsewhere for treatment. With your help, we can prevent that from happening.

More than 160,000 patients have benefited from the expertise of Southlake’s Regional Cardiac Care Program since its inception in 2003. Today, the program is known for performing a long list of first-ever procedures to treat heart conditions and heart rhythm disturbances. More than 1.5 million residents rely on Southlake for advanced and emergency cardiac care when every second counts, from across York Region, South Simcoe County, Dufferin County, and as far north as Muskoka.

From prenatal to neo-natal, to paediatric services, Southlake is here to care for your precious little ones, every step of the way.

Your investment will support our Regional Level 2C Nursery to help our teams better care for babies and save lives. With your support, we can update older equipment to give babies in emergency situations a better chance for survival. For example, replacing our older model isolettes with new all-in-one incubators will give staff quick access to resuscitate and stabilize newborns. This equipment, and more like it, makes a difference in the care we provide.

The Emergency Department is the front door of our hospital, open 24 hours a day, every day. But the demands for emergency care at Southlake are increasing like never before. Our community is one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario, putting added pressure on our Emergency Department. Your investment is critical to help improve our patients’ experiences.

Mental illness is an invisible disease, unlike a broken bone, blocked artery or tumour that you can pinpoint in an imaging test. But it has a visible need: space. For a patient in crisis, where they recover determines how they recover. Our passion at Southlake is to create the space where people can turn their darkest hour into the beginning of a journey to recovery.

A hidden crisis close to home

Our community faces the perfect storm of the mental health crisis: a rapidly growing population, aging demographics, and rising rates of mental illness and addiction. Our Mental Health Program is stretched far beyond capacity, sometimes as high as 180% of what it was designed for.

We can build this together

It’s time to make space for mental health, with a new Emergent Mental Health Assessment Centre so that patients don’t have to visit an overcrowded, distressing Emergency Department in a moment of crisis. It doesn’t end there: we’re transforming our existing capabilities with private rooms, more beds, outdoor space, and greater privacy. But we can’t do this alone. Your donations are critical to facing the ever-growing need for urgent mental health care close to home.

When recovery is your biggest priority…you need care that’s close to home.

Our Medicine Program includes beds for intensive care, acute medicine, medically complex patients, rehabilitative patients, cancer and palliative car patients, as well as our 30-bed Restorative Care Unit. Every day, our interprofessional team provides vital treatment that includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and recreational therapy.

We care for patients so they can get stronger, recover faster and get back home. But we can’t do it alone. Your support puts the right tools and equipment at patient bedsides so they are readily available for our care teams – this way they have more time to focus on the needs of each patient. For example, devices like ceiling lifts make it easier and faster for staff to move patients from a bed to a chair safely – important in minimizing the risk of conditions such as pressure injuries and bed sores.
