Expanding the Emergency Department with Renewed Equipment

Wednesday May 15, 2024

Southlake is expanding its Emergency Department space and renewing vital lifesaving equipment to support staff providing leading edge care to patients.

For 100 years and counting, Southlake has built healthy communities through leading edge care. Today, the communities served by Southlake are among the fastest growing and aging in Canada. Naturally, the number of patients and families who come to Southlake has increased.

The current Emergency Department was built in 2003. Since then, Emergency Department volumes have doubled. Southlake is now seeing over 120,000 visits each year – 50 per cent more patients per year than Emergency Department was designed for.

Expanding the Emergency Department and renewing vital equipment will reduce the impact of overcrowding experienced in the current space and help address urgent community healthcare needs. A larger space means that more patients will be able to wait more comfortably in the Emergency Department and move into areas of the Emergency Department where treatment and diagnosis can occur. Ultimately, this will improve the patient experience.

Construction is expected to begin this summer, during which time the Emergency Department will remain open. Through a phased approach to construction, Southlake will minimize the impact to patients and staff while work is underway. Patients and families should continue to seek care at the Emergency Department when they need it. Southlake will keep patients, families and the community informed throughout construction.

We thank the community for their continued support as Southlake works to deliver a better experience for patients, visitors and staff.
