Southlake’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre receives $2.5 million donation from Magna

Thursday October 20, 2022

NEWMARKET, ON – Southlake Foundation announced today that Magna has donated $2.5 million to support cancer care and the HERE is Where Cancer Meets its Match Campaign. This generous leadership gift is the largest donation to the campaign to date.

The demand for cancer care is greater than ever and Southlake’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre must keep pace. This $20 million campaign will help expand our capacity, improve wait times, and upgrade to state-of-the-art technology to keep care close to home so that those living with cancer do not need to travel downtown for care.

Magna’s generous investment provides a strong foundation as we work to create the cancer care our community deserves.

“We are so grateful to Magna for this transformational gift for cancer care,” says Arden Krystal, President and CEO, Southlake Regional Health Centre. “With this investment, we can improve access to care for patients at Southlake, increasing our capacity to deliver leading edge cancer care in our communities.”

More than a decade ago, Magna played a pivotal role in bringing the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre to our hospital. Their multi-million dollar pace-setting gift to the Southlake…count on me Campaign set the stage for Southlake Foundation’s most ambitious fundraising campaign to date. Their gift inspired our community of donors to surpass the $60 million campaign goal and make access to life-saving cancer care close to home a reality.

“Our partnership with Southlake’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre over the past decade has helped provide innovative technologies and world-class healthcare to support our employees, their families, and our community. Today, we are proud to pledge our support once again to help transform cancer care right HERE, close to home,” says Aaron McCarthy Executive Vice-President & Chief Human Resources Officer, Magna.

Delivering cancer care to York Region, South Simcoe County, and the northern Greater Toronto Area, Southlake’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre has redefined what a regional hospital is truly capable of by combining an academic hospital system’s expertise and care options with deep community connections and a compassionate patient experience. As a result, it consistently ranks in the top three of Ontario’s 14 Cancer Centres and was recently selected as the first partner to join the Princess Margaret Cancer Care Network.

“The need for cancer care has never been greater,” says Barbara Steed, Executive Vice President, Clinical Services and Regional Vice President, Cancer Services, Central Cancer Program. “We are so appreciative of Magna’s ongoing support, which helps our dedicated team of allied staff, nurses, and physicians to deliver high-quality care to the patients who rely on us.”

“Donor support is integral to our ability to put the right tools in the hands of our expert teams. With investment from our communities, and corporate partners like Magna, we will have the latest technology to continue to treat the growing number of cancer patients we see coming through our doors,” says Dr. Woodrow Wells, Radiation Oncologist, Southlake’s Stronach Regional Cancer Centre.

“Magna has been by our side since the beginning,” says Jennifer Ritter, President and CEO, Southlake Foundation. “Now they have stepped up once again with a lead gift to HERE is Where Cancer Meets its Match to help ensure that our communities have access to the cancer care they need, right here at Southlake. We are so grateful to them for their ongoing support of leading edge care, close to home.”

Quick Facts

  • Since opening its doors in 2010, more than 737,254 care visits have taken place at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre.
  • Since 2001, the communities we serve have grown at nearly twice the rate as the provincial average.
  • Demand for care is also being driven by the impact of deferred care due to COVID-19. Many people missed regular screening and medical attention. When they finally arrive at Southlake, their cancer is more complex and has progressed requiring greater intervention and care placing further demand on our Cancer Centre.
  • We are raising $20 million to expand our capacity, improve wait times, and upgrade to state-of-the art technology to keep care close to home so that those living with cancer do not need to leave our community for cancer care. The best care is right HERE. Close to home and near support networks of family and friends.
  • HERE is Where Cancer Meets its Match Campaign will officially launch at Southlake Foundation’s Here and Now Gala benefitting the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the Universal Eventspace in Vaughan. Together, we will:
    • Bring the first PET-CT to our Region to expedite diagnosis and support personalized treatment.
    • Expand our Radiation Therapy Program with new technology, replacing our original fleet of linear accelerators and adding a fifth to treat 400 more patients a year.
    • Expand our Systemic Therapy Program for chemotherapy treatment to over 870 more patients.
    • Expand outpatient care for acute leukemia patients so that the most vulnerable don’t have to travel downtown for supportive care.
    • Replace our MRI that is at end of its service life to conduct 8000 scans a year.
