As we gear up for Southlake’s largest annual fundraiser, we’re starting to see some action on the leaderboard. Vying for top spot? An amazing group of kids!
The Pickering College Pumas are a brand new team this year, though the team’s leaders are anything but. Brothers Jason (12) and Evan (13) have been participating in the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake for years. But this year, they were determined to do more than just participate.
Together, they formed the Pickering College Pumas, inviting their school classmates (from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12) and teachers to join in the fun and support Southlake, their local hospital. Some had participated before with their families, but the team allowed them to feel like they were in it together. For Jason and Evan, it was a way to recreate the energy and community spirit they like best about the event – especially among the many teams who participate, dressed in unifying colours, custom team shirts, and even feather boas. Named for their school mascot, the boys are encouraging their teammates to participate in their Pickering College gear.
As co-captains, the boys have a well-rounded approach to managing a successful team. Jason, a class representative on his school council at Pickering College, focuses on getting others to register for their team while Evan is great at encouraging fundraising. Their message?
It’s easy to support, and it’s important. If you have to go to the hospital, you want the people who work there to have the very best tools to care for you.
Their little sister, 8-year-old Maya, is also participating on the school team. Though it’s her first year participating, her creative fundraising has already played a big part in getting the team to the top of the leaderboard. In fact, the team has already surpassed their $2,000 fundraising goal!
These incredible siblings, and everyone participating on the Pickering College Pumas team, are proving that you can make a difference at ANY age!
