Southlake’s expanding capacity with field hospital tents during COVID-19 pandemic

Thursday April 23, 2020

Two medical field tents have been delivered to Southlake Regional Health Centre and will be ready for use in the coming days to help with the potential influx of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tents, which will be set up near the hospital’s East entrance, can house up to 30 patients and are fully equipped with heating, air conditioning and power. The tents are also capable of maintaining negative pressure, should additional isolation facilities be required, giving the hospital flexibility to repurpose the tents as the pandemic evolves.

“These tents offer us flexible ways to expand capacity whenever and however we need to during this ever-changing pandemic,” says Arden Krystal, President & CEO of Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Emergency Department patients suffering from respiratory illness, or those being tested for COVID-19, will be the first to occupy the tents.

These additional facilities were made possible in part thanks to the generous donations of two community members, and will make a significant impact on Southlake’s ability to continue delivering safe quality care during this pandemic. As portable units, they will also be available in the event of any future health emergencies.

“We are truly grateful for the response we’ve received from our communities who are eager to ensure our frontline workers have the tools they need at this challenging time,” says Susan Mullin, President & CEO of Southlake Foundation. “This feeling of community uniting together during this crisis is being felt and deeply appreciated by all.”

These Blu-Med negative pressure isolation tents are supplied and installed by Rampart International.
