SCRUB IN with Southlake: Fall 2024

TIM KNEW HE WAS IN THE BEST POSSIBLE HANDS

Tim Greenwood woke up one Sunday morning and was immediately seized by pain in his left foot. It was also extremely cold to the touch. Tim decided to get it checked out at the Emergency Department at Southlake—just a few blocks away.

“I wasn’t sure I should go. I thought they might say it’s nothing,” says Tim. “But I was seen quite quickly, and they assured me it was a good thing that I came in.”

The doctor was unable to find a pulse in Tim’s foot, which meant there was no blood circulation. It turns out he had blood clots. The next day, Tim had a surgical procedure in which a balloon was inserted into his leg to try to push out the blood clots.

Although the surgery went well, Tim continued to experience severe pain in his foot, as well as a lack of movement. The medical experts at Southlake did everything they could to save Tim’s foot, but about three weeks after the surgery, Tim’s care team made the decision to amputate his leg below the knee to save his life. “It was kind of a relief in a way,” says Tim. “Finally, the pain was gone, and I no longer worried that the clot might travel to my lungs or heart.”

FOR AGNES VILLENEUVE, IT COMES DOWN TO KINDNESS

Before Agnes’ husband Daniel passed away a few years ago, the couple thoughtfully decided to leave some of their estate to hospitals that were meaningful to them. Daniel wanted to use his legacy to ensure that others experience the same outstanding care that he received over the years. “That’s who my husband was,” says Agnes. “He was a kind human being who stopped to help people.”

When Daniel was just 47, he had a major heart attack. A patient of Dr. Zaev Wulffhart, who helped to establish the Regional Cardiac Care Program at Southlake, Daniel was one of the first people to receive an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). This lifesaving device delivers shocks to the heart when it detects an irregular heartbeat.

In choosing which hospitals to donate to, Agnes says she based her decision on the feeling you get when you walk through the doors. “I decided to give to hospitals that show kindness and caring,” explains Agnes. “I look for kindness because kindness will outlast,” she adds. It’s no wonder Southlake is at the top of her list.

What will your legacy be?

If you would like to ensure future generations have access to leading edge care in our communities, we hope you will consider leaving a gift to Southlake in your Will, as Agnes and Daniel have done. After your loved ones are taken care of, you can allocate a portion of your remaining estate to Southlake. Your generosity will make a lasting difference. Leading edge care is Southlake’s legacy—make it yours.

HONOUR YOUR SOUTHLAKE HERO

Southlake’s hospital family—our physicians, nurses, staff, and volunteers—share a passion to care for our communities. These everyday heroes often go unnoticed, but they set Southlake apart from other hospitals. It’s why our patients continue to have the best possible experiences here.

Is there a doctor, nurse, volunteer, member of our clinical or support staff, or even an entire department that went above and beyond to care for you or a loved one? You can share your gratitude by sending a message of thanks and making a donation in recognition of the exceptional care you received. Your Southlake Hero will receive your personal message of gratitude and a special pin in recognition of your generosity.

ADVANCING BREAST CANCER TREATMENT AT SOUTHLAKE

Southlake Regional Health Centre is excited to announce innovative new technology that will enable health teams to provide more precise surgical interventions for more than 200 women who are treated for breast cancer at Southlake each year.

Our new MOLLI 2® System includes a wire-free marker, roughly the size of a sesame seed, that a radiologist implants into a patient’s breast to mark lesions and tumours prior to surgery. The surgeon then uses a specialized wand and tablet to locate the marker. This made-in-Canada technology is considerably less invasive than inserting a guidewire into a patient’s tissue. The new system’s pinpoint accuracy helps to preserve more healthy tissue, reduce the amount of changes to women’s bodies, and provide a significantly better patient experience.

We’re deeply grateful to the Ladies in Philanthropy for Southlake (LiPS) for helping to bring this life-changing technology to patients and our community. Southlake relies on the generosity of philanthropic groups such as LiPS, as well as individual donors like you, to help ensure our health teams have the best equipment to deliver leading edge care.

MONTHLY GIVING MAKES AN ONGOING IMPACT

If you would like to make a greater impact on patient care at your hospital, consider monthly giving. It’s the most cost-efficient and reliable way to help meet the critical needs at Southlake and support leading edge care, close to home. Even just a little bit every month can make a big difference in the lives of people in our shared community.

“I have lived in the area for 17 years and visited Southlake a few times. The service and care I received has been excellent. I donate to a few charities and decided to become a monthly donor to a place that was just down the street from where I live and which provides such great care.”
